Saints defender Virgil van Dijk has won the fans’ Player of the Month award for October.

The centre back has enjoyed a great start to his career on the south coast after his reported £13m move from Celtic to Southampton on deadline day.

The Dutch defender starred in all three of Southampton’s league games in October, helping his side in their memorable 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge as well as the two draws against Leicester City and Liverpool. His performances in October saw him see off competition from Graziano Pelle, Sadio Mane and Cedric Soares to recieve 60% of the fans’ votes.

"These first two months have been great for me and that’s all happening because of my teammates and the staff. I’m enjoying every day so I’m happy," van Dijk told Southampton’s official YouTube channel.

"We have a good run going on as well now. I think for us as a defence we want to keep a clean sheet and that’s something we need to improve."

van Dijk has also made his presence felt in the opposing penalty box as well, netting Saints’ second goal in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City last month.

"I try to be dangerous attacking wise. That’s something I train on and we work on every week so if I can help the team I will always do that."

The centre back is enjoying life on the south-coast and is hopeful that the current good run of form will continue to.

"Everything is settled and we need to keep working and building and hopefully do better than last year. Hopefully, we can keep this run going and win more games.

"I’m just happy to be here. I’m enjoying every week and every game."
