Saints started strongly before captain Jose Fonte opened the scoring with a powerful header at the near post to make it 1-0 on 20 minutes. Former FC Groningen star Dusan Tadic, who had an impressive game for Southampton, delivered an outswinging corner on a plate for Fonte before he nodded the ball into the net.

Before that, Victor Wanyama went close with a header of his own after directing Steve Davis' corner against the crossbar.

After some decent play from Groningen, Saints made the most of their Dutch foes' inability to take advantage of their chances when Mane made it 2-0. Tadic and new Portuguese signing Cedric combined well on the right wing before delivering a low ball into the box for Senegalese international Mane to drive home in a sweeping move.

Tadic was again at the heart of Southampton's third goal after wriggling and outwitting a despairing Dutch defence before slotting Pelle through on goal who comfortably put the ball in the back of the net to the exposed goalkeeper's left.

The game saw new signing Jordy Clasie make his Saints debut after coming on at half time.

It was an impressive performance for Koeman's men as they look to carry this momentum into their Feyenoord friendly and their Europa League clash against Vitesse Arnhem.
