The best and worst of Southampton FC songs

Songs of the music kind.

After "The Red Stripez" created their little ditty - "Southampton in Europa" - in tribute of the Saints' entry into the Europa League qualification rounds, I decided to delve into the murky world of Saints songs. <!-- ######## START FLOATED VIDEO SNIPPET ######## -->

Thanks a lot, guys. That was really good of you.

I feel a tad hypocritical writing this piece as I am not blessed with a morsel of musical talent. However, opinion is free and all that so here goes.

The Red Stripez - Southampton in Europa

I'll start with the two chaps who led me to this musical journey.

I really wanted to hate it. But, I can't. It's catchy as hell - so much so, I heard a number of Saints fans sing it in and around St. Mary's last Thursday at the Vitesse home game.

The song doesn't take itself seriously which is always a plus, and the acquisition of Paul Jones for the music video is a great touch. 8/10

Unknown - Rudi

This song has aged thanks to the subject matter - Rudi Skacel - having moved away from Southampton after his stint during the Championship season from 2006 to 2009.

Skacel didn't exactly set the world alight during his time at Southampton, which makes me think this song was created purely due to the ease of replacing the name "Ruby" with "Rudi". Even so, it's a decent attempt at making a Saints cover of a song which was popular at the time. 6/10

Coast - Colours

I respect the musicianship and the passion these guys have for the club. But, this is a bit bland for my tastes.

Not only that, but the chorus namedrops the Chapel End - St Mary's obligatory docile stand - which just epitomises beige. 3/10

Unknown - Southampton F.C. Anthem

Oh God. MAKE IT STOP! The dodgy techno beat is manic. The sound of the Southampton fans' intensity. It's all a bit much.

Again, I appreciate the love for the club it would clearly take to make an - ahem - anthem for Southampton, but I can't help but feel this song is doing a bit of a disservice to the club and its fans. Still, I'd much rather listen to something a bit more upbeat than the last dreary number. 3.1/10

Some of these may be pretty bad. But, at least we don't have Arsenal's "Away Boyz"

I fully recommend everyone to watch the above if you ever feel a bit down. Pure comedy no matter what.
