Writers Predict: Game one

A new season means a return to the weekly ritual of having a good laugh at Mark Lawrenson's predictions on the BBC website. This year the musings' masthead will put their reputations on the line and try to predict the saints results.

First up is a trip to Sports Direct land. Last season Koeman's men did the double over the magpies but historically the gruelling trek the length of the country has meant getting any sort of result is a bonus.

Saints don't have a good history with curtain raisers. Winning just 3 of the last 23 games on the opening weekend is the worst record in the league. And the bad omens continue when you take a look at our away form to end last season. LLLLL.

Despite this the bookies make Southampton slight favourites at 13/8 with Newcastle 11/5 and a draw 9/5. Mitrovic and Cisse are 11/2 favourites to be first goalscorer with Graziano just behind at 6/1

So lets hear what the oracle of football predictions thinks will be the outcome:

Lawro: 2-1

"Steve McClaren is a very good coach and I am expecting Newcastle to have a very good season after their recent problems..."

Regular visitors to Lawrenson predicts will no doubt be aware that when he predicts Southampton to lose they invariably prove him wrong. So lets hear from the real experts:

Will: 0-1

"I went to St James' once, it snowed, Fox gave away a pen, Hooiveld scored an OG. Things are better now but not if you support Newcastle."

Jake: 1-1

"With Saints leggy from the European travels, I think Ronald Koeman's men scrape an away draw against a rejuvenated Newcastle."

Dan: 1-3

"Saints start the season sharper than the Northern club after their competitive pre-season games. Mane to score and be linked with a big money move..."

George: 1-2

Rules are one point for a correct result, three for a correct score.
