Ronald Koeman began his press conference by giving the press Southampton's team news. While Shane Long will be back in the team, he announced a tough loss as Steven Davis is not fit for this weekend (ankle injury), and could possibly be out two to three weeks.
This was an injury picked up in the Leicester City game. "We have very good replacements for his position," Koeman said. Koeman noted that Steven Davis is a key player, and a normal starter, so it is a big blow, especially if his injury keeps him out of next week's match against Everton as well.
Koeman was asked about his side's chances of making it into European competition for next season. "Of course, but it starts by winning games." He said that while the Leicester game was a blow to their chances, the teams around Saints in the table didn't have great results either. "We can make a big step (towards Europe) with a win this Saturday."
The manager was then asked about the realistic chances Saints have at matching 60 points in the league, which was their total from last season. Koeman admitted that it will be difficult, but also attributed the lower points total to the overall competitiveness of the Premier League this season compared to last year. "Less points than 60 should be enough for European football."
Ronald said that Saints can expect a tough fight from Newcastle, who currently need points to avoid relegation. "They (Newcastle) need points because they are in danger of being relegated. We have to prepare for a fight."
Finally, Koeman addressed the recent rumors that Dusan Tadic is unhappy with his current situation and could look to leave in the summer. "Dusan was surprised at the papers, because he is one of the players that comes to me when he has a problem. We will see next season what happens." Koeman basically said that this is a non-issue currently and Dusan is causing no problems.
