Southampton was defeated 2-1 at Swansea City, as Gylfi Sigurdsson’s strike secured consecutive Premier League wins for the hosts.

Shane Long levelled terms at the Liberty Stadium nearing the half hour mark, but Sigurdsson helped Swansea earn just their second win over Southampton (2D, 6L) with a goal 20 minutes from full time.

Southampton, meanwhile, has just one victory in their last five league outings — the others all defeats — and sits in 12th place in the standings.

The visitors made a spry start with Shane Long firing over from a tight angle, but they could not take advantage of tremendous pressure, which has become synonymous with their season.

Sigurdsson had Swansea’s first chance when he thrashed at a 26th-minute effort from distance before Leroy Fer took aim ten minutes later with both drawing saves from Fraser Forster.

Alfie Mawson, however, gave Swansea a deserved 1-0 lead from the resulting corner, as he turned in a header that deflected off Oriol Romeu on its way towards goal.

Sigurdsson nearly doubled the advantage on the stroke of halftime, but Forster did enough to deny the midfielder and push the ball over the bar.

But against the early run of second half play, Ryan Bertrand picked out Long, who tapped in at the near post from close range to level the match on 58 minutes.

Nathan Redmond drew a fingertip save from Lukasz Fabianksi in the 64th minute with Southampton in the ascendancy.

Sigurdsson, however, restored Swansea’s lead on the counter attack after a long run from Luciano Narsingh helped open space for a left-footed shot from the Icelandic midfielder.

Maya Yoshida’s knock-down header narrowly eluded the charging Long, who was looking to equalise for a second time, in a last gasp attempt.
