It was commiserations for Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida, who each scored spectacular goals either side of a Norwich penalty, but Steven Naismith levelled in added time to force a FA Cup Third Round replay.
Southampton manager Claude Puel – with an eye towards Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final first leg – made eight changes, and Norwich six.
Harry Lewis, making his Southampton debut, was called into action when he denied Martin Olsson’s well-struck free kick on 10 minutes at a subdued Carrow Road.
Dusan Tadic had the visitor’s first chance on target in the 20th minute when his free kick was pushed behind by Michael McGovern before Shane Long fired over the bar following a nice bit of counter attacking play nearing the half hour mark.
The visitors, however, were rewarded seven minutes from half time, as van Dijk met Tadic’s cross with a thumping right-footed effort to make it 1-0.
Norwich made a spry start to the second half with Josh Murphy hitting the side-netting and their efforts paid dividends when Cameron Jerome earned a penalty after being clipped down in the box.
Steven Whittaker then equalised from the spot in the 52nd minute, as he dispatched past Lewis, who had given away the initial foul.
Tadic missed a chance to nudge Southampton back in from close-range with the rebound failing to find Jay Rodriguez. But Maya Yoshida restored the advantage with a spectacular header on 67 minutes.
With the tie seemingly done and dusted for Southampton, Naismith was left free in the box to head beyond a sprawling Lewis from eight yards out to earn a replay at the death.
