Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand played the full 90 minutes to help England confirm qualification for the 2018 World Cup finals following a 1-0 win over Slovenia at a half-empty Wembley Stadium.
England largely looked sloppy in a game which saw visitors Slovenia arguably have the better chances to score, but a late goal from Tottenham’s Harry Kane sealed three points and a spot at next year’s World Cup.
Bertrand looked solid as ever at left-back, helping his team keep a clean sheet and maintain England’s unbeaten record in Group F.
Meanwhile, Southampton’s Steven Davis, who captains his native Northern Ireland as well as the Saints, saw his side fall 3-1 losers at home to reigning World Cup champions Germany, who top Group C.
Northern Ireland have had a fantastic qualification campaign which has already seen them comfortably finish group runners-up and are likely to feature in the play-offs to feature in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
