Everton are one of the few Premier League sides who can relate to Southampton’s woes in both defence and in front of goal as the season heads into its hectic Christmas schedule.
The Toffees sacked former Saints manager Ronald Koeman last month for overseeing Everton’s poor form, but Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino remains at the club despite a lacklustre start to the season at odds with previous seasons.
Saints will be missing Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu through suspension, having accumulated five yellow cars. Meanwhile, summer recruit Mario Lemina—who has missed the last three games through injury—could feature if he passes a late fitness test.
Everton are without in-form striker Oumar Niasse as he begins a two-game ban after being adjudged to have dived for a penalty last week against Crystal Palace in a retrospective ruling which was a Premier League first.
Interim manager David Unsworth will also be missing Tom Davies through suspension, while Phil Jagielka and former Saints favourite Morgan Schneiderlin are fitness doubts.
Stats Zone (via BBC Sport):
Everton have won just one of their last eight games away to Southampton (D3, L4).
They have failed to score in eight of their last 12 Premier League visits to face Southampton, including four of the last five.
The Toffees' 3-0 victory at St Mary's Stadium in August 2015 is their only win away to Saints in the last 15 years.
Saints have failed to score in their last two games and did not even register a shot on target against Liverpool last weekend.
They have scored only nine goals in the Premier League this term (three of them penalties), their fewest after 12 top-flight games since 1998-99.
Southampton have won just four of their last 20 league games (D7, L9).
They have failed to score in 10 Premier League home games this calendar year. The only team to have recorded a higher figure is Portsmouth (11 in 2007).
They are winless in their last 14 top-flight away games, their worst run for 20 years since a 19-match streak from December 1996 to December 1997.
Everton have conceded inside the opening minute of 10 different Premier League games - more than any other side in the competition's history - including their 1-0 defeat at St Mary's 12 months ago when Charlie Austin scored the only goal after 41 seconds.
The Toffees conceded 24 goals in their opening 12 Premier League games this season, a figure exceeded only by West Ham (25).
They have not kept a league clean sheet since their 1-0 win over Stoke on the opening day of the season.
Everton have conceded 157 fouls, the highest figure in the Premier League this season prior to the latest round of games.
