Despite Southampton’s unfortunate 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday, the two fixtures Mauricio Pellegrino’s Saints played last week—including a 4-1 thrashing of Everton—will have filled the squad with a lot of confidence going into this South Coast clash against neighbours Bournemouth.
Saints are likely to be missing both Cedric Soares and Shane Long from Sunday’s squad.
Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth will not be able to call upon the services of defenders Brad Smith and Tyrone Mings through injury, while pacey winger Junior Stanislas faces a late fitness test to feature today.
Stats Zone (via BBC Sport):
Head-to-head
Bournemouth have won one and lost five of their last eight meetings against south coast rivals Southampton. That victory was a 2-0 home win in March 2016.
All four of Southampton's league wins at Bournemouth have been by a 3-1 scoreline.
The Cherries have scored in all 10 league home fixtures against Southampton.
Bournemouth
Bournemouth have lost four of their seven home league matches. Only Swansea, who have lost five, have been beaten on more occasions at their own ground.
The Cherries lost just six games at the Vitality Stadium throughout the whole of 2016-17.
Joshua King scored only his second league goal in 12 appearances this season against Burnley on Wednesday. He scored 10 goals in his final 12 league games of 2016-17.
Callum Wilson's last five Premier League goals were all scored at Vitality Stadium.
Southampton
Southampton have lost three of their last four Premier League matches.
Fifteen of the Saints' 16 league points have come against sides that began this round of fixtures below them in the league table.
They have 16 points after 14 league games, which is their lowest tally at this stage of a season since 2012-13.
The Saints have scored just 22 goals in 25 league matches since the start of April.
Mauricio Pellegrino's side have hit the woodwork eight times this season, which is an equal-league high with Liverpool.
Oriol Romeu is one game short of his 100th Premier League appearance.
