Southampton manager Claude Puel will hope his Saints side overcome their poor 2017 league form by beating relegation strugglers Sunderland, who will be buoyed by last week's 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Saints will be missing club record signing Sofiane Boufal, who picked up an ankle injury in last week's defeat to West Ham, but could welcome Nathan Redmond in his place.

Meanwhile, Saturday's hosts Sunderland look to welcome back pair Adnan Januzaj and John O'Shea, who have overcome respective hip and hamstring injuries, but the team will be missing both Jack Rodwell and Papy Djilobodji through injury and suspension.

Stats Zone (via BBC Sport):

Sunderland are on a four-match winless streak against Southampton in all competitions.

Their only victory in the last eight Premier League meetings came at home in March 2015, and the Black Cats did not keep a clean sheet in any of those games - and lost 8-0 in October 2014.

Sunderland ended a six-match winless run in emphatic style by beating Crystal Palace 4-0 last week, their biggest Premier League away victory since 1999.

The Black Cats have kept successive clean sheets, as many as they managed in the previous 22 games this season.

They have faced 76 attempts on goal at home this season; only Hull (77) have a worse record in the Premier League this season.

Jermain Defoe has 14 league goals in 2016-17 - just one shy of his total for last season.

Claude Puel's side have lost six of their last seven league games.

Southampton are one of three Premier League sides yet to earn a point away from home in 2017, along with Burnley and Bournemouth.

They have failed to score more than once in 20 of their 24 league fixtures this season.

Manolo Gabbiadini has scored in each of his last four club appearances: three for Napoli and one for Southampton.
