Southampton announced the signing of Martin Caceres on Saturday evening - a deal which will see the Uruguayan international stay on the South Coast up until the end of the season.
Caceres, who will be wearing the number 12 shirt for the rest of the 2016/17 season, has earned 68 caps for his country and has a wealth of experience which has seen him play for clubs such as Juventus and Barcelona.
During his time at those two aforementioned clubs, Caceres has won five Serie A championships, the La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
The 29 year-old left Juventus after his contract expired at the end of the 2015/16 campaign and missed the majority of 2016 with a ruptured achilles tendon.
According to the club's official press release, Caceres said: “I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football. I am looking forward to getting started with my new teammates.
“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.”
Executive Director of Football Les Reed said: “Recruiting players in January is an extremely difficult task, and this year was a particularly challenging market for centre-backs.
“Martin is a great talent, who has played at the very top level and won many trophies and medals. He is a very experienced international player for Uruguay and has enjoyed notable success with both Juventus and Barcelona.
"In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he will bring experience, talent and character."
Here's hoping this is the man to shore up our defence ahead of the looming League Cup final.
