Southampton will hope to get back to winning ways after suffering a devastating 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in the EFL Cup final last week at Wembley Stadium.

In their way is Walter Mazzarri's Watford, who sit one place above Claude Puel's Saints in the Premier League standings in 12th, though their point advantage over Southampton is undermined by the latter's game in hand.

Saints will be missing talismanic Virgil van Dijk as he continues to recover from an ankle injury picked up against Leicester City in January. Though, this could provide new signing Martin Caceres a chance to make his Southampton debut.

In other team news, Southampton 'keeper Fraser Forster is expected to feature against Watford despite picking up a thigh injury in the EFL Cup final last Sunday.

Watford will be missing their January signing Mauro Zarate, who is out for the season after suffering a serious knee injury against West Ham.

Though, lanky goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon could return from an ankle problem, and Daryl Janmaat may feature as his injury is assessed ahead of kickoff.

Stats Zone (via BBC Sport):

Southampton are unbeaten in six league games against Watford (W3, D3).

The Hornets have registered just two shots on target in the three previous Premier League meetings.

Watford have only lost one of their last six home games in the Premier League, a 4-1 defeat by Tottenham on 1 January.

Troy Deeney needs one goal to reach 105 for Watford and draw level with Cliff Holton, the fourth-highest goalscorer in the club's history.

Southampton have lost 11 of their 25 league games, as many defeats as they suffered in total last season.

The last time Southampton lost the League Cup final, in 1978-79, they went seven games without a win in all competitions (D5, L2).

Saints have scored three or more goals in each of their three away victories this season.

Manolo Gabbiadini has scored five goals in his first three appearances for the Saints, including two in the EFL Cup final.
