Charlie Austin’s extra time penalty lifts Southampton over West Ham

Saints tried to throw it away against 10-man West Ham, but Austin rescued it.

Manolo Gabbiadini delivered St Mary’s first home goal in over nine hours in a fiery 3-2 win over West Ham.

Javier Hernandez did his best to deny Southampton scoring his first Premier League goals since 2014, but Charlie Austin rescued all three points from the spot in extra time.

Marko Arnautovic saw red -- and then saw straight red -- for a high elbow on Jack Stephens whilst Dusan Tadic and Mark Noble were both lucky to make it to half-time after early reckless challenges.

St Mary’s, which hadn’t seen a home goal since April 5th, finally had something to cheer about when Gabbiadini fired his left-footed effort across Joe Hart and into the bottom corner.

Arnautovic nearly had a response for West Ham, but Fraser Forster made an awkward save to deny diving headed attempt on 22 minutes.

But after being left on the deck moments earlier, Arnautovic took matters into his own hands when he let a passing elbow catch Stephens in the face and was immediately shown red by Lee Mason.

Former Saints captain Jose Fonte compounded the situation when he dragged down Steven Davis in the box, forcing the referee’s hand to point to the spot.

Tadic unconvincingly made it 2-0 as he beat Hart, who was only able to get a trailing foot to the ball, for pace.

West Ham, however, would pull one back on the stroke of half-time. Michail Antonio’s thundering effort could only be parried away into the path of Hernandez to easily finish from close-range.

Gabbiadini looked to restore Southampton’s two-goal advantage on the hour mark, but his effort from distance left the crossbar shaking, before Tadic drew a stinging save from just inside the box.

Southampton were unable to find a breakthrough despite sustained pressure in the West Ham and they paid for their inability to finish the game.

Hernandez would level proceedings -- from yet another rebound at the back post -- after Forster was only able to save Diafra Sakho’s header 15 minutes from full-time.

Nathan Redmond came close to a winner nearing full-time, but Hart did enough to save the attempt off the bar as West Ham looked to escape with a point.

Zabaleta, however, gave Southampton an out when he fouled Maya Yoshida in the box in added time and Austin stepped up to give Mauricio Pellegrino his first win as manager.
