Southampton announced that Sam Gallagher has joined Championship side Birmingham City on loan for the 2017/18 season.
This marks Gallagher’s third in as many seasons, having previously been loaned to Milton Keynes and Blackburn Rovers.
The 21-year-old’s year-long stay at Blackburn last season was his most fruitful as he turned in 12 goals across all competitions.
“He impressed Mauricio in pre-season and the manager has given Sam some targets to achieve on loan,” said Southampton Vice Chairman Les Reed.
“He has many exciting years ahead of him here, after reinforcing his commitment to the club this summer with a new four-year contract.”
Gallagher has not featured for Southampton since 2014, and has only made a total of 20 appearances for the first-team whilst scoring twice.
Reed added, “Sam and the club feel that regular game at Birmingham City, who have strong ambitions to be towards the top end of the Championship, will help him improve even further and we look forward to monitoring his progression.”
