Southampton’s yips in front of goal continued as they battled to a 0-0 draw at Huddersfield.
Ryan Bertrand had a late header cleared off the line and Nathan Redmond squandered to quality chances for Saints, who have scored just once from open play this season.
Fraser Forster caught a glimmer of his past form making six saves just a day after he was dropped from the England National Team.
But despite the lack of goals, however, Southampton managed to keep their Premier League unbeaten run (1W, 2D) in tact.
Newly promoted and high-flying Huddersfield saw their momentum stifled, but saved a point when defender Tommy Smith made a goalline clearance in added time.
Southampton created the opening chance with Steven Davis freeing Redmond down the left. He was, unfortunately, left frustrated as he dragged his shot wide of the post from a narrow angle.
Davis also had a chance to give Saints an early lead, but Chris Lowe halted the run with a lunging tackle.
Rajiv van La Parra then saw his attempt, which was headed for the bottom corner, from 16 yards out, diverted away by the Saints midfielder.
The Terriers grew in confidence following a positive spell of play, and Steve Mounie found himself firing wide on 31 minutes, before Fraser Forster denying Tom Ince of a goal from a tight position.
Having spilled the initial cross, Forster recovered in time to prevent Elias Kachunga’s first-time shot five minutes to keep it goalless at the break.
The second-half was marred by little chances after each side came close. Manolo Gabbiadini tested Jonas Lossl to no avail whilst, at the other end, Mounie headed over the bar.
Saints began to apply late pressure in a bid to steal all three points, but Redmond was again prevented his goal when Lossl was equal to the task.
Bertrand nearly sent the visiting crowd home happy, meeting Shane Long’s looping cross and heading it back across goal only to see it cleared off the line by Smith.
