Pellegrino: Southampton could still make summer splash

You mean... There’s a chance?

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has hinted the club remain open to adding to the squad this summer.

“We are there expecting and ready, and always if we can improve our squad we will do it,” Pellegrino told the Daily Echo. “It is difficult because we have a good squad but we want to give another step in our ambition from inside and from outside also.”

With less than a week before the start of the Premier League season, the only fresh face Southampton have added is 21-year-old defender Jan Bednarek.

Southampton, however, remain linked to Mario Lemina with reports suggesting the Juventus midfielder is expected to undergo a medical at St Mary’s ahead of a £16m transfer.

“We are studying the market with some options,” added Pellegrino. “It is difficult to bring in important players and hopefully some of them can come in to make us stronger.”

Southampton wrapped up the pre-season with a 2-0 win over Sevilla and that has obviously given Pellegrino a belief that his current players can compete and be successful.
