Cedric Soares and Wesley Hoedt both played the duration for Portugal and the Netherlands, respectively, in World Cup qualifying wins on Sunday.

Hoedt and the Netherlands rebounded from their thrashing against France to claim a 3-1 win over Bulgaria in Amsterdam. The crucial Group A result saw the Oranje climb within two three points of France, which has a game in hand.

Cedric also ended the September international break on a high, as Portugal defeated Hungary to stay within three points of Group B leaders Switzerland.

The Saints defender continued to impress, narrowly missing out on scoring his second-ever International goal when he fired wide from outside the box in a then goalless game.

Andre Silva’s goal, however, would be enough to push the European champions over the line in Budapest whilst Switzerland also secured victory.

World Cup qualifying continues on Monday with a trio of Saints in contention for places in their respective starting line-ups.

Steven Davis and Northern Ireland host the Czech Republic knowing a draw or better would secure second place in Group C whilst Ryan Bertrand and England battle Slovakia at Wembley Stadium.

Jan Bednarek failed to make the bench in Poland’s loss to Denmark, but hopes to feature against Group E’s bottom dwellers Kazakhstan.

All games are set to kick-off at 7:45pm (BST).
