Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy came on in the second half of England’s 3-0 win over the USA to win his first cap for the country.

McCarthy was called up to the England squad for the fifth time by manager Gareth Southgate, but hadn’t featured in the team until last night.

Two first-half goals in quick succession from Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold essentially wrapped the game up ahead of McCarthy’s cameo.

But the Saints ‘keeper did keep a clean sheet in the second half after coming on for Everton’s Jordan Pickford, as England added to their score via AFC Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson.

The debutant looked comfortable, though was rarely troubled by the American frontline in a game which signaled Wayne Rooney’s farewell from the England team.

This time last year, McCarthy was second-choice to Fraser Forster.
