Southampton’s 3-1 defeat to Tottenham was a footnote on an otherwise bright day for the club following the appointment of Ralph Hasenhüttl as new first-team manager.
The former RB Leipzig boss replaces Mark Hughes, who achieved just two wins during his time in charge with the club, which included a crucial victory at Swansea to lift the Saints to Premier League safety.
Former Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis, however, was left to oversee Saints at Wembley, but goals from Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min spoilt the evening.
Charlie Austin netted a consolation goal in added time — his first in the league this year and latest since August 28 in the Carabao Cup.
Kane got Spurs off to a quick start with his ninth minute, as the forward met Christian Eriksen’s low cross aimed at the near post.
Southampton, unhappy to just make up the numbers, came close to a leveller, but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was thwarted by Hugo Lloris.
Much like the opening quarter-hour, Tottenham powered ahead 2-0 on 51 minutes when Lucas Moura pounced on the rebound of his own effort after the initial shot was blocked.
Kane then turned provider with Son, who was left with a tap in goal to make it 3-0 just four minutes later.
James Ward-Prowse looked most likely to give Saints a slim way back into the match, but was twice denied, included a double-save 15 minutes from full-time with one coming at point-blank.
Austin, however, ensured Southampton didn’t leave the capital on a sour note when he raced through on goal and finished cooly past Lloris.
