Southampton defender Maya Yoshida is expected to miss up to five weeks with a knee injury according to manager Mauricio Pellegrino.
In his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s visit to Burnley, Pellegrino confirmed that Yoshida incurred his injury in training just a day before Saints’ 2-1 away win at West Bromwich Albion last week in the FA Cup fifth round.
This means the Japanese centre-half is also set to miss upcoming matches against Stoke City, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
Southampton currently lie 18th in the Premier League and the club’s injury list is growing, with Charlie Austin, Steven Davis, Sofiane Boufal, and Shane Long all struggling for fitness.
“Maya will be out for a minimum of four to five weeks,” Pellegrino said as per Reuters.
“Last week I said that everybody is OK and then in the last training session three or four players out. Football has this unpredictable moment and you cannot control this but hopefully in the next few weeks everybody will be alright.
“Maybe Sofiane will be involved in the team (against Burnley), but Long and Davis will have to wait another week.”
