After netting for Southampton against Crystal Palace in their 2-0 away win last weekend, Saints striker Danny Ings revealed he has entered an ambitious wager with former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah over which play will score the most goals this season.
While Ings struggled to get any playing time for Liverpool last season after recovering from a knee injury, Salah netted 44 goals in just 52 appearances.
However, both Ings and Salah have got off to their respective 2018/19 campaigns with two goals in four games.
”We’ve got a little one [bet]. Mo is Mo. One of the best players in the world,” Ings said after the game [H/T ESPN]
”It was more of a bit of banter between us. Mo’s a good friend of mine. Everything he gets he deserves.
”There’s not many more humble players in football. It’s a bit of a laugh. Hopefully, we’ll both score plenty of goals this season.
”Can I beat him? It would be incredible wouldn’t it? I’m just working every day to improve. I’ve missed a lot of football.”
Asked whether there was any money involved, the 26-year-old striker said that the only thing riding on the bet was banter-related bragging rights.
”I wouldn’t be stupid enough to put any cash on it! It’s just a bit of banter,” he added.
”People would think I’m mad to take on that bet if there was cash involved. He proposed it on messages when I left.”
At two apiece, can Ings keep up with his good friend Salah? Southampton fans will certainly hope so, given the latter’s goalscoring exploits of last season.
