Danny Ings notched his 13th Premier League goal as Southampton defeated Tottenham 1-0 at St Mary’s Stadium on New Year’s Day.
Southampton, who has won three of their last five matches (3W, 1D, 1L), climbs into 11th with the result and joint on 25 points with Everton and Newcastle.
Ings brought Southampton’s early pressure to a head when he dinked the ball over his defender before thumping a left-footed shot off the ground and past a frozen Paulo Gazzaniga.
Nathan Redmond saw an earlier chance saved and the midfielder came close to doubling Southampton’s advantage only to have his goal-bound shot deflected behind by Toby Alderweireld.
Spurs thought they had equalised on 73 minutes through Harry Kane, but the England international was deemed to have been in an offside position.
Southampton then withstood the onslaught of pressure from the visitors, with Jan Bednarek making several key clearances.
Jack Stephens, who was the last man back, prevented Spurs on the halfway line from breaking into the Southampton half five minutes from full-time.
