Chelsea vs Southampton team and injury news
Premier League football returns this weekend and Southampton visit Chelsea in the second Saturday game to resume the domestic calendar.
Southampton are coming off two wins on the bounce against Burnley and West Bromwich Albion. Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will be hoping to continue this run of form against Chelsea despite an international break.
In terms of team news, Hasenhuttl has confirmed that he will be missing three players.
New signing Mohammed Salisu is still ruled out - the defender has yet to feature for Southampton since signing from Real Valladolid in the summer.
Moussa Djenepo is also unavailable after picking up a hamstring injury in Saints’ aforementioned 2-0 win over West Brom.
Meanwhile, Stuart Armstrong is back in training but won’t be considered to play after he tested positive for COVID-19 while on international duty with Scotland last week.
New Saints signings Theo Walcott and Ibrahima Diallo are in contention to play for their new club.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are returning to action off a big 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.
The Blues could be set to hand a debut to summer signing Hakim Ziyech, while fellow forward Christian Pulisic is expected to feature.
However, three of Chelsea’s new transfers are fitness doubts for the game. Ben Chilwell was forced to withdraw from the England squad with an undisclosed injury.
Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is definitely out of the match after injuring his thigh while away with Senegal last week.
Lastly, Brazilian defender Thiago Silva is expected to be rested.
