Harrison Reed has impressed on loan in all three of his stints in the Championship at Norwich City, Blackburn Rovers and Fulham.
According to The London Evening Standard, Fulham have an £8million option to buy Reed and the biggest obstacle for the deal is just to agree personal terms with the Southampton academy product.
However, the report says Reed could feature in Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans in the upcoming Premier League season, but cannot assure the player of game time like Fulham could.
If Reed can get those first team football assurances away from Southampton, it’s said that the club will not stand in his way of a move.
With former Saints captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leaving the club for Tottenham in the summer transfer window, Southampton could do with some bodies in central midfield. Reed could well fit the bill if he is given a proper run in the team - like he showed in flashes under Ronald Koeman years ago.
When does the summer transfer window open and close?
The summer transfer window opened on 27 July and closes at 23:00 on 5 October.
A domestic-only window for trades between Premier League and EFL clubs will run from 5 October until 16 October at 17:00.
