Southampton are in talks with German side Schalke over a £20million transfer for midfielder Weston McKennie according to Sky Sports.

However, the report says Saints may have to sell players to fund the deal.

Sky’s German colleagues claim McKennie is keen on a move to the Premier League and is interested in a deal. In fact, the article says the US international turned down a move to Bundesliga rivals Hertha Berlin in favour of relocating to England.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is on the lookout for reinforcements in central midfield since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg left Saints for Tottenham earlier in the transfer window.

Finding that £20million to fund the transfer could be tricky.

Saints are blighted with plenty of dead wood players such as former record signing Guido Carrillo, Mario Lemina and Wesley Hoedt.

Southampton have been unable to sell those players so far, instead having to offload them on loan.

It’s assumed Southampton will be hoping to sell those players in this transfer window even if it’s for less than they were signed for.

When does the summer transfer window open and close?

The summer transfer window opened on 27 July and closes at 23:00 on 5 October.

A domestic-only window for trades between Premier League and EFL clubs will run from 5 October until 16 October at 17:00.
