Before the international break, Dean Smith was relieved of his duties by Aston Villa following their 1-0 defeat to Southampton, but he gets the chance to avenge that loss as Norwich City, his new club, welcome Saints to Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon.

Smith confirmed ahead of the game that he has almost a fully fit squad to select from for this Premier League clash.

Two midfielders considered key to Norwich City’s Premier League survival are at least nearing a return to first-team action.

Todd Cantwell and Billy Gilmour have been pictured training with the first team and Smith confirmed they are in contention to feature, as well as other previous defensive fitness doubts Ozan Kabak and Grant Hanley.

“He appears to be fit,” Smith said of Cantwell. “We’ll assess him today,” Smith said during his first pre-match press conference.

The only players Smith confirmed to be doubts for Saturday are Christoph Zimmerman and Sam Byram.

“We have a fully fit squad, apart from Zimbo [Christoph Zimmerman] and [Sam] Byram, who is playing 45 minutes for the U23s tonight,” Smith added.
