Southampton’s upcoming Premier League game against Brentford has been postponed following a Covid-19 outbreak at the West London club.
Saints were due to host The Bees at St Mary’s on Saturday.
This news comes amid the latest wave of the Covid-19 coronavirus to hit the United Kingdom and its new Omicron variant.
“It is with regret that the Premier League Board has postponed a further four matches due to be played this weekend,” said a statement issued by the Premier League earlier this evening.
“The Board has agreed to postpone the matches after assessing individual club requests this evening. Brentford FC have an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. This has resulted in their training ground being closed which means they are unable to prepare for Saturday’s game.”
The affected fixtures are:
Southampton vs Brentford: Saturday, 18 December, at 3pm
Watford vs Crystal Palace: Saturday, 18 December, at 3pm
West Ham United vs Norwich City: Saturday, 18 December, at 3pm
Everton vs Leicester City: Sunday, 19 December, at 12pm
At the time of writing, there is no indication when the Southampton - Brentford fixture will be rearranged. This rise in coronavirus cases also leaves the traditional Christmas football calendar in doubt.
