Jan Bednarek gets Manchester United red card overturned, available for Newcastle

The FA showed sense, rescinding Mike Dean’s decision to send off Southampton’s Jan Bednarek

Southampton defender Jan Bednarek is available to play against Newcastle United on Saturday after his red card was overturned upon appeal.

Bednarek was sent off against Manchester United by referee Mike Dean, who judged him for denying Anthony Martial an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

To many onlookers, Martial went down with minimal - if any - contact, yet Dean sent the Poland international off despite watching the replay on the pitchside monitor.

A statement from the FA said: “Jan Bednarek will be available for Southampton FC’s next fixture after an Independent Regulatory Commission upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal and removed his suspension.

“The defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity during a Premier League fixture against Manchester United FC on Tuesday [02/02/21].”

Saints’ successful appeal is finally a bit of good news for the club after that big defeat to United and a string of injury problems that has ravaged Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first team options.
