Newcastle team news: New signing could play against Saints, but three out injured

Newcastle United vs Southampton team news

Southampton will be desperate to bounce back from their unfortunate and somewhat controversial 9-0 midweek defeat to Manchester United.

Saints continue to have a series of players missing as injury has depleted the playing options open to manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Defender Jannik Vestergaard and Kyle Walker-Peters are nearing a return according to the Saints manager, but are unlikely to feature today.

Oriol Romeu is back in training but is also a doubt, whereas the status of Ibrahima Diallo and Theo Walcott is unknown.

Stuart Armstrong is definitely unavailable after picking up a muscle problem in the week.

Some tangible good news is that Jan Bednarek is available after his red card picked up against Manchester United was overturned on appeal.

Takumi Minamino could feature against Newcastle after joining from Liverpool on loan in the January transfer window.

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce also has some injury concerns - particularly in defence.

Defenders Federico Fernandez, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett are all fitness doubts for the Magpies.

Ciaran Clark could also be unavailable after his partner went into labour.

Meanwhile, new loan signing Joe Willock - who joined Newcastle from Arsenal in January - is expected to play a role today.

Newcastle United vs. Southampton pre-match stats

Head-to-head

  • Newcastle have lost just one of their past 15 Premier League home matches against Southampton (W11, D3).

Newcastle United

  • Newcastle have lost six of their past seven league games.
  • Their only victory in 13 league and cup matches came at Everton in the top flight on 30 January.
  • The Magpies could suffer a fourth consecutive league defeat at St James’ Park, and go six top-flight games without a home win for the first time in three years.
  • All seven of Steve Bruce’s home league fixtures as a manager against Southampton have been decided by a single-goal margin (W5, L2).
  • Callum Wilson has scored or set up 15 of Newcastle’s 22 league goals this season, including each of the last four.

Southampton

  • Southampton can equal the club top-flight record of five successive defeats, which happened most recently between May 2005 and September 2012.
  • A fifth straight league loss would be their worst run in a single season since 1998.
  • When Saints were beaten 9-0 at home by Leicester City in October 2019, they went on to lose each of their next three matches in all competitions.
  • Their only victory in nine Premier League games came at home to Liverpool on 4 January.
  • Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have failed to score in six of their past eight league fixtures.
