Report: Southampton castaway Wesley Hoedt set for reluctant Saints return

Wesley Hoedt burned bridges with Southampton after moving to Lazio on loan. As it turns out, Lazio don’t want the Dutch defender either.

Wesley Hoedt has a history of burning bridges with his former clubs.

According to many outlets, Hoedt angered Italian club Lazio for the way he handled his move to Southampton in 2017.

The Dutch defender, still contracted with the Saints, rejoined Lazio on loan last summer and went on the charm offensive. Said charm offensive came at the expense of Southampton, as Hoedt continues to disparage the club and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl from afar.

However, Hoedt’s form in Serie A has been poor and it’s thought that Lazio have little interest in making the centre-back’s return a permanent one.

Italian media outlets La Lazio Siamo Noi, Citta Celeste, and Corriere dello Sport all report that Lazio will not be keeping Hoedt around beyond this season.

Hoedt has only made 13 appearances for Lazio in Serie A so far this season. This is his third loan spell away from Saints, having spent time at Celta Vigo in Spain and Antwerp in Belgium.

The defender’s Southampton contract expires in 2022.
