Newcastle vs Southampton: Saints team news | Hasenhuttl gives injury update

Newcastle vs Southampton: Newcastle team news | Bruce gives Saint-Maximin injury update

Newcastle vs Southampton team news

Newcastle United host Southampton on Saturday afternoon and both teams will be hunting after their first wins of their 2021-22 Premier League campaigns.

It hasn’t been the best of starts for Steve Bruce’s Newcastle.

League defeats to West Ham United and Aston Villa have been further compounded by a loss on penalties against Burnley which saw them crash out of the Carabao Cup midweek.

Southampton haven’t blown the world away either.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 loss away at Everton, but managed to come away with a hard-earned point after drawing with Manchester United a week later.

Saints also beat League Two opposition Newport County 8-0 in the week, which could give them a lift.

In terms of injury news, Bruce is hopeful that he can call upon two players who were previously fitness doubts.

Allan Saint-Maximin is expected to feature despite picking up a knock against Burnley, as is Paul Dummett who has recovered from a calf issue.

Midfielder Isaac Hayden is not expected to play as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

Two Southampton midfielders will miss out on this game at St. James’ Park.

Stuart Armstrong has a calf injury, one that has forced him to withdraw from the Scotland national team in the past few days.

Will Smallbone is the other confirmed absentee, as he continues to battle his way back into fitness following a horrific knee injury he picked up mid-game against Leicester City last season.
