Southampton vs Chelsea team news
Saints welcome last season’s European champions Chelsea to St Mary’s this afternoon and are looking to build off their 1-1 draw away at Leeds United which snapped a three-game losing run.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have endured a tough week. They were comprehensively beaten by fellow West Londoners Brentford last weekend, before losing in the first leg of their Champions League tie with Real Madrid midweek.
In terms of team news, Saints have a bit of a problem in Armando Broja being unavailable. The Southampton top goalscorer is unable to play against his parent club Chelsea while he’s on loan at Saints.
Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is said to be nearing a return to full fitness following his hamstring injury, though Shane Long is currently suffering from an ankle problem.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hinted that the Blues may be without Romelu Lukaku and Hakim Ziyech as they have “little problems.” They’re due to undergo late fitness tests.
Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell will definitely miss out. The former has back and Achilles injuries, while the latter is a long-term absentee.
